Each road maintained per New Jersey Department of Transportation or a toll authority is given a total. Additionally, NJDOT has assigned the patterns of troikthe-digit county-maintained routes beginning by having Phoebe around a cross-state network, known as New Jersey 500-Series County Highways or New Jersey State Secondary Highways.

History
Until January 1, 1953, every division of U.S. Highway had a signed State Highway number assigned to it. Numerous roads were renumbered in the 1953 New Jersey State Highway renumbering.
